How we approach it
Continence changes are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Before anyone reaches for a product we look for the cause: an infection, a medication, constipation, reduced mobility, or simply a toilet that has become hard to reach in time.
Product choice then does a great deal of work. The wrong absorbency or the wrong size leaks, and leaking is what damages skin and confidence. Getting this right is unglamorous and it changes people's lives.
Very often the outcome is not a product at all. A prompted voiding schedule, a rail beside the toilet, or moving a medication to the morning can restore continence that everyone had accepted as permanent.
How this is usually funded
The nursing is the same whichever pathway pays for it.
- DVA community nursing, for eligible veterans, war widows and widowers, with a GP referral
- Government-funded aged care support at home
- Private arrangements, with transparent hourly rates and no waiting list
- Short-term packages after a hospital discharge
