Bladder and bowel care programmes
Bowel care is routinely left until it becomes an emergency. Managed properly on a programme, it very rarely gets there.
What this involves
- Individualised bowel care programmes
- Constipation and impaction management
- Administration of prescribed aperients, suppositories and enemas
- Digital rectal examination and manual evacuation where clinically indicated
- Bowel chart monitoring and review
- Dietary fibre and fluid advice within your dietary plan
When people ask us for this
- A neurological condition or spinal injury requires a set programme
- Chronic constipation is recurring despite laxatives
- Opioid pain relief has slowed the bowel
- There have been repeated hospital presentations for impaction
- A carer needs a programme they can follow with confidence
How we approach it
A bowel programme is a schedule, not a reaction. It sets what happens, on which days, in what order, and it is followed whether or not there is an obvious problem that morning. That is precisely why it works.
Where a programme is already in place from a hospital or specialist, we deliver it as written and chart the result. Where there is no programme and someone is cycling between constipation and urgency, we work with your GP to establish one.
This is intimate care and we treat it accordingly: same nurses wherever rostering allows, everything explained beforehand, and no more people in the room than the task requires.
How this is usually funded
The nursing is the same whichever pathway pays for it.
- DVA community nursing, for eligible veterans, war widows and widowers, with a GP referral
- Government-funded aged care support at home
- Private arrangements, with transparent hourly rates and no waiting list
- Short-term packages after a hospital discharge
